Casino Glossary

Clear definitions for the terms you'll encounter when reading about UK online casinos. No industry jargon left unexplained.

RTP (Return to Player)
The theoretical percentage of money a slot or table game pays back to players over a very large number of spins or hands. An RTP of 96% means the game returns £96 for every £100 wagered, on average over millions of rounds. It does not mean you'll get 96p back on every £1 you bet — short sessions can vary wildly from the theoretical figure. RTP is a long-run mathematical property, not a session guarantee.
Wagering Requirement (Playthrough)
The amount you need to wager before bonus-derived winnings can be withdrawn. A 35x wagering requirement on a £100 bonus means you must wager £3,500 before cashing out. Higher is less favourable. Not all games contribute equally — slots typically contribute 100%, live casino games often contribute 10% or nothing. Always check the T&Cs for eligible games before opting into any bonus.
Free Spins
Bonus spins on a slot game, typically awarded as part of a welcome offer or promotion. Free spins have a fixed stake per spin set by the operator. Any winnings from free spins are usually subject to a wagering requirement before they can be withdrawn. The value of free spins is therefore lower than cash of the same nominal value.
Live Casino
Games hosted by real human dealers in a studio environment, streamed in real time to your device. You place bets via an interface but watch an actual croupier deal cards or spin a roulette wheel. Live casino requires a decent internet connection and is more data-intensive than standard slots. Quality differs between providers — Evolution is the market leader for UK operators.
Game Provider (Studio)
The company that develops and supplies casino games to operators. Providers like Evolution (live casino), Pragmatic Play, NetEnt, Red Tiger and Microgaming create the slots, table games and live dealer experiences that operators host. An operator's game range is largely determined by which providers they've contracted with. Two operators using the same providers will often have overlapping libraries.
UKGC (UK Gambling Commission)
The government body that licenses and regulates gambling in Great Britain. All online casino operators legally offering services to UK residents must hold a UKGC licence. The licence imposes rules on how operators handle player funds, dispute resolution, responsible gambling tools and advertising. You can verify any operator's licence on the UKGC's public register.
RNG (Random Number Generator)
The software system that determines the outcome of each spin or hand in digital casino games. A properly certified RNG produces outcomes that are statistically random and not influenced by previous results or the size of your bets. UK-licensed operators must use independently tested RNGs, certified by approved testing bodies such as eCOGRA or GLI.
House Edge
The mathematical advantage the casino holds over players in any given game, expressed as a percentage. It's the complement of RTP — if a game has 96% RTP, the house edge is 4%. Every game in a licensed casino is designed to return less than 100% of wagers over time. Understanding the house edge is the most important thing to know before gambling.
KYC (Know Your Customer)
The identity verification process that UKGC-licensed operators are legally required to carry out. You'll typically be asked to provide photo ID (passport or driving licence) and proof of address at some point — often before your first withdrawal. The timing and strictness varies by operator. Providing accurate information at registration avoids delays later.
GamStop
The UK's national self-exclusion scheme. Registering with GamStop excludes you from all UKGC-licensed operators simultaneously. Exclusion periods are 6 months, 1 year or 5 years. Once set, exclusions cannot be reversed early. It's free to use and available at gamstop.co.uk.
Volatility (Variance)
A measure of how frequently a slot pays out and in what size. High-volatility slots pay out less often but in larger amounts; low-volatility slots pay out more frequently but in smaller amounts. Volatility is separate from RTP — two slots can have the same RTP but very different volatility profiles. Higher volatility means a bigger bankroll is typically needed to absorb losing streaks.
Cashback Offer
A promotion where the operator refunds a percentage of your net losses over a set period. A 10% weekly cashback on up to £100 of losses means a maximum of £10 returned. Cashback is usually paid as bonus funds subject to a wagering requirement, not as withdrawable cash. Always check whether the cashback is paid in real cash or bonus money — the difference is significant.
